His wife was Mary Catherine (daughter of Mary Slattery) by whom eight known children, Ethel, George, Myra, Charles, Minnie, Agnes, Bethel, & Starlen. The family was later to migrate to Illinois and Nebraska. Albert's parents may have been called John and Mary and his uncles or great uncles may have been Sam, Tug and Dan. The family folklore is that this group of Tennessee Butlers originated from Ireland. The enquirer has noted DS130 and DS47. Any other leads?

John m. Lucinda Murdock (b. 7 June 1785 Coventry CT d. 7 March 1856) by whom children including Hebzibah (d.23 May 1893 aged 83 m.14 Oct 1834 Levi Palmer), Amanda (b.27 April 1804), Eliza (b.17 Sept 1806), Angeline (b.22 May 1812), Harvey (b.31 Dec 1815), and Horace (b.26 jan 1819 d. 11 June 1878 m. Hannah E.[surname unknown]). The family bible also records "Moranda" [sic - ? Miranda] Palmer (b.6 Oct 1835 possibly da of Levi and Hebzibah) who m. 17 Feb 1859 J.J. Bogardus. Other documents in the possession of this family record one Sarah Coffin who lived to be 106 years old, who was second cousin to President John Adams and who was mother of Harriet Bogardus (b.26 Aug 1810 - so possibly the mother of J.J. Bogardus).

Benjamin m. Annie Candace née Malone (b. 1 Aug 1874 d. 29 Nov 1954) by whom Charles, Leo, Gurt, Margaret and two other daughters, names unknown. Charles (b.c. 1910, d.c. 1949) m. Lillian Clair Colbert by whom ?eighteen? children including James, Paul, Larry, Robert, Walter, Eugene, Richard, Tommy, Violet, Janet, Louise, Linda, & Lois. Chales & Lillian lived at East Freedom and Altona PA and also at Butlers Hollow. Charles worked in coal and steel yards. Lillian and children moved to Rochester NY c. 1945. Enquirer seeks relatives.

John's father is believed to have been called James. John m. Mary née Tierney of Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Butler relatives are still believed to live in the Thurles area.

He m. 1910 Elizabeth Connelly when he was 30 years old. It is said that the Butlers of Barnaby River originally hailed from Kilkenny, Ireland. Suggest investigating the possibility of a connection to Michael Butler (1784-1866) of Tipperary Town, emigrant to New Brunswick (Q477 Happy Families).

A planter with a plantation called Ormond Hall in the St James Santee Parish. He m. 1782 Ann Bennett, then after her death m.(2) 1790 her half sister Mary Hamlin. His children included John, Thomas, James & Mary.

Who were her parents and ancestors ? She m. 1823 Absalom Peak of East Poplar Creek, Anderson Co. and, in 1829, moved to Scott Co. Illinois where she d.1891. Much of this data comes from her obituary which adds "she obtained a hope in Christ and united with the Old School Baptist church in Virginia when quite young".

From the 1840 census in Perry Co. IN. and from the 1840 marriage record of a Thomas J. Butler and Mariah Hise in Breckenridge Co. KY just across the river, this couple have been tentatively identified as the parents of Thomas J. and William. The situation is slightly confused by story of Thomas J. (senior) drowning sometime between 1843-50 and an 1850 death certificate of a Mariah Butler aged 4 in Shelby Co. IN. By 1880 William Butler and his wife Elizabeth had settled in Middletown, Ohio with their children James, Margaret, David, Laura, and Thomas. William's brother Thomas J. (junior) is found in 1850 in Breckenridge Co. KY living with the family of Thomas Holt, subsequently to m. Amanda Ann Chapin and d. 16 June 1918.

(DS148) Margaret b. Co. Waterford, Ireland arrived Australia 1857

Margaret arrived aboard the "Simla" in Australia in 1857 where she m.1858 Robert Wells Campbell witnessed by Bridget Butler. The marriage certificate gives Margaret's birthplace as Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, Ireland but on one of their dead children's birth certificate Margaret's birthplace is stated to have been Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, Scotland. Any leads in Ireland (and or Scotland) ?

(DS147) Richard Butler b. Kilkenny, Ireland c.1750, settled in USA pre 1790

What were his Irish origins? Mary Smith in her book "The view from Butler Knob to Kilkenny Ireland" states that Richard m. Sarah Throckmorton b. Halifax, Virginia. Family legend suggests that Richard came to Halifax, Virginia, then to North Carolina, then some of the family moved to Tennessee. Research indicates that Richard was living in Montgomery, North Carolina from before 1790 till c.1814 and that he m. 14 March 1796 Sarah Enroughty (who signed her name "Sarah Darby") witnessed by Robert Throckmorton. In c.1815 the family seem to have migrated to Burke Co. North Carolina, where they became active in local affairs. Records including the 1820 Census indicate Richard's children to have been: Stephen b.1774 (m. Susannah ?), Thomas 1784-1826, John Edward 1798-1840 (m. Rachel Smith), William Claiborne 1802-1841 (m. Margaret Allison Tate) and Hugh (? b.1813 m. Lucinda ?). William Claiborne Butler was a large slaveholder and the first elected Sheriff of Burke Co. (His middle name is thought to have stemmed from a Claiborne connection on his mother's side). John Edward Butler was the largest slaveholder in the area (50 Slaves), later a slavetrader and gold mine proprietor, he was known as "Colonel Butler" (despite no known military service) and was apparently killed in a duel in Tennessee c.1840. Very little further is known about Stephen, Thomas and Hugh.

Who were his ancestors? According to an old family tree, he m.1852 Mary Thompson (b.1827) by whom Mary b.1853, Titus Thompson b.1856, Sarah b.1857, Zeplha b.1859, Emily b.1860, John b.1861, Rose b.1864, and Clara b.1866. In 1873, the family sailed to Australia on the "Iron King", settling in South Australia where John died prior to 1877 and his wife died 15 august 1905. Zelpha m. George Edward Ripley and later returned to Yorkshire, UK, where she d.16 March 1922.

(DS145) Thomas Butler of Ely (1700's), ancestor of brothers William and Gamaliel Butler (b.1783, qualified lawyer 1808, emigrant to Tasmania 1825)

Gamaliel and his brother William m. two sisters from Richmond, Surrey, Sarah and Elizabeth Ann Paine. They were sons of John George Butler of Hounslow who is said to have been "one of the twelve sons of Thomas Butler of Ely". Any info ? A 1960 monograph by G.T.Butler of Tasmania claimed, without stating sources, that Henry Pearch Butler was a "cousin" of Gamaliel, that they had both practiced law in London and mentioning three other cousins "Richard, Thomas and John, practicing about the same time in London". Henry Pearch Butler (1763-1829) was s/o Richard Butler, s/o Daniel Butler of Margate & Rye, Sussex,(one of whose sons was the renowned Rev. Weeden Butler), a branch which stemmed from Claines, Worcestershire. The family connection between Gamaliel and Henry (or Thomas and Daniel) remains obscure. Any leads / clarification ?

Who were Edward's parents? They are said to have married in Kilkenny Castle and arrived in the USA in 1825 with a considerable fortune, settling in South Carolina. Their first son, Pierce Nugent Butler b.1825 became a doctor of medicine at the age of 19 and m.1859 Aurelia Picot by whom Louis Picot Butler b.1867 in Beaufort, Missouri. Louis also became a doctor; he m.1892 E. E. Thompson in Buffalo, NY; When their son was born in Brooklyn, NY on 5 Sept 1894, Louis was in Germany studying medicine and the mother (EE who died in childbirth) was staying with her cousin Edith Crangle née Robinson. Louis subsequently m. (2) Adele Thompson.

Who were Thomas' parents? Marian emigrated to Australia c.1850 with her children, Emily Saville b.c. 1832, Edmund Henry b.c.1836 Birmingham, Annie Lucy b.c.1838 and a son, name unknown, who died young. The mystery deepened upon the discovery of a rather puzzling marriage announcement in The Sydney Herald dated 28 Feb 1852, "On the 11th instant, at Jamison Street, Sydney, by Rev. M. Goethe, G.F.D. Lovedy [sic: presumably Loveday], son of the deceased G. Lovedy, gentleman, and nephew of the late General Lovedy, Bath, to Emily Savile Butler, fourth daughter of the late Honorable Thomas Henry Butler, Captain of Heavy Dragoons, and grandaughter of the late, and sister to the present, Viscount Mountgarret."

Said to have been a native of Co. Tipperary, Mary was widowed and emigrated to Canada with seven children sometime between 1830-1845. Her children were John, James, Pierce, Mary, Julia, and Margaret and one other who died soon after arrival in Canada. Butler ancestors sought. They settled in Hastings, Ontario, Canada. A number of descendants have already made contact with each other on the Members' Only Notice Board of this website. Mary was b. 1805 Tipperary but still searching for records of John in Ireland.
