BOSTON, Massachusetts (port of) Arrivals
BOSTON INDEX for Butler and variations 1848-1891
NARA film #M265, roll 30 & roll 31
Transcribed by Mary Sandler, 1999-2000.

Note: The lists for the first quarter of 1848, Jan. to March, are known to be missing.
No passengers are recorded for that time frame. There could be other missing quarters
that I am not aware of.

Another problem with the Boston Index is that in doing some research on my own Butlers,
I noticed that there were very few entries for the year 1848 in the Index, though I had
seen a number on the original ships' lists. I have finished checking the first half
of 1848 so far, and will do the rest when possible, but most of the arrivals for 1848
were for some reason not indexed, despite being in the time frame for this film.
The 1848 entries from the original lists will be located in a smaller file, which so
far includes the years 1843 to 1847. Years prior to 1843 will be done as time allows.

For the most part, the passengers in this Index arrived at the Port of Boston, though
a few were marked as coming in at Gloucester, which has been noted by their names.

As much as possible the abbreviations used on the original have been used here.
If necessary, footnotes will follow directly after any entry that requires an explanation.
This work has been re-checked against the original film, and any mistakes, it is to be
hoped, have been caught, though inevitably there could be a few. The original ships’
lists should always be checked as well.

All those passengers shown as traveling with the main listed passenger on each index card
will be added into this list alphabetically. This will allow researchers to find those
passengers who were not recorded alphabetically in the Index on their own index cards.
And this will easily show most of those who would be traveling as a family, except of
course for any cousins or others of different surnames. For example, the child Isabella H.
who is with Anne A. in 1866, is not listed in the filmed Index, and therefore would not
easily be found there on the filmed Index. Here Isabella H. will be listed alphabetically,
but will also still be shown with Anne A.

I have not grouped together those who were recorded on their own cards, but who were on the
same voyages, so using a search feature to find a particular ship name or date of voyage
will enable one to find others on the same voyage.

In addition, the columns for birth, residence, etc., will only apply to the main listed
passenger on each card. For any passengers traveling with the main passenger, it cannot be
assumed that the information applies to all the passengers on a card.

For a few passengers, there appear to have been duplicate cards made by the original indexers.
This is noted by those names. At times, these had the same passenger number on their original
manifests, at other times there were different passenger numbers, which would indicate that
there could be 2 passengers of the same name on the manifest, or perhaps another explanation
would be revealed if the original ship’s list is checked.

The variations of the name Butler are all listed separately. They should all be checked, as
spellings were arbitrary in those days, and those writing out the original passenger lists were
spelling names without any uniformity. And as the Index itself was copied at a later date from
the manifests, there were undoubtedly more typos made then. Variations included here are Butlers,
Buttler, Butlar, Butter. Butter while it is a separate surname, has sometimes been found to be
incorrectly written in place of Butler.

Terms used:
Some types of ships were identified such as sch. for schooner; stmr. or stm. for steamer,
as well as bark and brig. A few times, only br. or bg. will be found for bark and brig.
Ng will be used if information was not given.
A or US for America or United States.
Br. Prov. sometimes used for British Provinces.
Can for Canada.
CB for Cape Breton, probably the one in Canada. There is also a Sydney mentioned a few times,
but perhaps could be the port of Sydney in Canada.
E for England.
GB for Great Britain.
Hal sometimes used for Halifax.
I for Ireland.
NB for New Brunswick.
Nfld or NF for Newfoundland.
NS for Nova Scotia.
PEI for Prince Edward Island.
Scotland will be spelled out if written that way.
St. J. sometimes used for St. John or St. Johns.
The few times Wales or Russia or Germany or any of the other locations are mentioned,
they will be spelled out if it is certain.

The ports of departure were not included on the Index. The original passenger lists
should be consulted for that.

Columns are: First name; age if recorded (a few times only A was written in
the age column, probably for adult); gender will be given here if necessary only if
first initials do not give an obvious clue; date of arrival in Boston; ship’s name;
b for birthplace; c for citzen of; r for last residence; d for destination; occupation;
yes or no if in US previously; last column for condition of health if given. The last
two columns were not provided for earlier years.

It cannot be assumed that the ages, or occupations, or the information about origin, etc.,
are completely accurate on the original records. There could be many instances of errors,
for a number of reasons.

This entry and the entry for Ralph, 6, on 10 Aug 1890 have been copied correctly
from the Index film, though they are 3 days apart. Perhaps the original transcriber
copied date incorrectly. Or perhaps they were not together at all, and these could
have been short voyages from a nearby port.

may be questionable. Ship information was the same as previous entry which puts it
in doubt. The original ship’s list should be checked to see if these were really Butlers
or whether original writer wrote the same surname as the previous Sarah age 27, whose
passenger number was #267. The group with Sarah age 45 were numbered 271 to 277, which
puts them just after Sarah aged 27. The individuals in this group with Sarah aged 45
have not been added into the Index by this transcriber, as I believe the entry possibly
    could be in question.
